Helensburgh
& District Pipe Band is thought to be one of
the oldest pipe bands (outside the military) in
Scotland and therefore in the world, with records going back to pre-1st
World War.

Originally the Clan Colquhoun Pipe Band who were
closely connected to the Clan Colquhoun.
Unfortunately this relationship ended and so the name was changed to Helensburgh
& District Pipe Band. However, the band still wear
the Clan Colquhoun crest (top right) as cap
badges and still wear
the 'Ancient Colquhoun' tartan which is used as
the background throughout this website.
|
|
Even with the different names, the band has now
been on the go in one form or another for almost
100 years.
|
|
The
band has a good competition history and are
former World Champions at Grade 3 under Pipe
Major Archie McNicol. He played pipes which were
originally used at the Gallipoli landings during
the First World War. Interestingly, these pipes
are now owned by the present day Pipe Major,
John Low.
|
|
After
a short lull in the 1990s due to lack of
drummers, the band is now going from strength to
strength and confidence of returning to the
competition scene increased in 2004 with a 2nd
place in our local Helensburgh Pipe Band
Competition at Grade 4.
|
We
have many new pipers and drummers, young and old
and our instruction classes are becoming almost
too large to cope. There are also a few band
members from yester year returning to the band
now that it is in full swing again.
